00:00:00:00 - 00:00:19:15
Nate Carver
Hey, it's Nate Carver, your favorite mortgage guy. And today we are talking to Lindsay Meyer. And she is the author of the upcoming book, Forget Everything You Know about networking. Perfect. No, no, it's not right. Is it?
00:00:19:17 - 00:00:26:06
Lindsey Meyer
It's actually, I thought you were doing that as, like, a hook, because it's another way to say it. Yeah.
00:00:26:08 - 00:00:28:09
Nate Carver
Well, you want to.
00:00:28:11 - 00:00:46:08
Lindsey Meyer
I'll fix it up. No. No worries. Rethink everything you know about networking. So if you want to forget it, too. And and read the heartfelt stories from our 28 authors, you know, you can forget or rethink. I'm sure there's many more words we can fill in there.
00:00:46:10 - 00:01:04:24
Nate Carver
Rethink everything you know about networking. I have the collection of the rethink series over here. Oh yes, you do. And, so I'll be picking up that one next month and, we'll get to that. Just wanted to tease this up a little bit. It would certainly help if I did it correctly.
00:01:04:24 - 00:01:26:04
Nate Carver
Hey, I'm Nate Carver and welcome to Between Two Doors.
00:01:26:04 - 00:01:29:18
Nate Carver
so, Lindsay, tell me a little bit about your background.
00:01:29:18 - 00:01:42:20
Nate Carver
I understand you're about a fourth generation real estate agent, the real estate agent expert. And so I'd love to hear how you got into it and your your arc to where you're at today.
00:01:42:22 - 00:01:53:13
Lindsey Meyer
Thanks. And thank you so much for having me on your podcast. I love how you represent veterans and our country serving was it 17 plus years yourself?
00:01:53:15 - 00:01:53:22
Nate Carver
I'm about.
00:01:53:22 - 00:02:21:21
Lindsey Meyer
1515. All righty. Well close enough. So thank you. And as far as as the real estate business, I was dropped into the industry through my family. The Springer side, my dad's side got in in the industry, 1981. And, I was able to witness hard work, you know, networking locally, working more in person because back in 81, we didn't have cell phones or pagers.
00:02:21:21 - 00:02:43:16
Lindsey Meyer
If anyone remembers those, what that means. So I was able to watch the hard work dedication of my entire family. I have about six family members that work at Great Plug, worked there for about 15 years and was lucky enough to get in the national title space and beyond. So loved the industry. It's definitely been ingrained from a very young age.
00:02:43:16 - 00:02:51:15
Lindsey Meyer
And many, many of my friends, and colleagues obviously have been made through through the 20 plus years I've been in it.
00:02:51:16 - 00:03:09:01
Nate Carver
So awesome. So you you've been all over the US in real estate. What are some key things you've carried away from that that you wouldn't want other real estate agents to, to hang on to or sink their teeth into?
00:03:09:03 - 00:03:27:08
Lindsey Meyer
Sure. And we can even blow that up a little bit bigger, I think real estate agents, in order to get your foot out there, you know, once again, forget kind of what you know, what you think you know, start from scratch. And I think it's really getting a touch and and what's your why? And what's your market.
00:03:27:08 - 00:03:53:05
Lindsey Meyer
What what is a good client. What does that, that niche look like. Maybe it's not just one person, but get a handle on what you're looking at for the next year. You know, sometimes thinking too broadly can can, be a little tough, especially if you're starting out in the industry no matter what age you are. So for real estate agents, I see a lot of local activity, community involvement, the local Mortgage Bankers Association.
00:03:53:08 - 00:04:20:15
Lindsey Meyer
There's a lot of different ways that are economical to get involved. If it's not something where you want to start out in person, why don't you create a zoom and invite five people that you want to get to know and host that for about 25 minutes? There's a lot of different opportunities to think outside the box. And I do think ease of technology and getting in front of that homebuyer and helping educate them on the process is key.
00:04:20:21 - 00:04:44:03
Lindsey Meyer
So sounds like a lot. But I think if you break it down, find your why in your niche and you go from there, maybe use a ChatGPT as a friend to help plan along the way if you're into it. Or count on people like myself and others out there and Nathan who can help better serve you and, put together an actionable plan and really become partners in many ways.
00:04:44:05 - 00:04:58:16
Nate Carver
Awesome. Hey, tell me, from a buyer or sellers perspective that we might be listening to this, what trends are you seeing that they might want to pay attention to educating yourself?
00:04:58:18 - 00:05:21:08
Lindsey Meyer
It's the best time to be able to learn and take the time. Yet save some time on really learning about the process. It's I'm sure you've heard it before. The most expensive purchase in your life. Or one of them. And there's a lot of different aspects that go into it. Our industry, the mortgage real estate industry, can seem so large.
00:05:21:10 - 00:05:46:12
Lindsey Meyer
It's definitely broken down into verticals. And if you hire and work with people you trust, it makes a big difference. And so reputation reviews, referrals. I think they go a long way in our industry and also giving some space and grace. For those that are newer in the industry and learning, you can still find a really good broker or agent or loan officer member.
00:05:46:14 - 00:06:08:01
Lindsey Meyer
It may be someone, a coordinator to help you and learn more. For example, title insurance is probably not going to be something most people know, but have a local contact or have your realtor loan officer introduce you to someone and have a conversation. So you have a go to when you need it and if you need it. So don't take too much time, but stay with the process.
00:06:08:01 - 00:06:16:22
Lindsey Meyer
And I think it's important to, always keep your ears, you know, open, listen to others and try your best.
00:06:16:24 - 00:06:26:04
Nate Carver
I like it, so let's, let's talk about rethinking everything, or rethink everything you, you know, about networking.
00:06:26:05 - 00:06:31:24
Lindsey Meyer
We say, Ray, can. Ray can learn the way. Can.
00:06:32:01 - 00:07:04:08
Nate Carver
Yeah, yeah, I looked at the hashtag, and so it's it's wrecked me. So what if you get this in my head, right. Okay, so I've read the rethinking series. This fantastic. Our industry is changing rapidly, and, I work with a lot of real estate agents, and I had my peer group of, mortgage lenders that we bounce ideas off of.
00:07:04:10 - 00:07:22:22
Nate Carver
So every time a rethink book comes out, I'll grab it. And, I know, I know, call Draper. I'll drop the name there, but, I've met him personally and have had dinner, and he's, excellent.
00:07:22:24 - 00:07:27:08
Lindsey Meyer
We're getting through some storms, y'all, over in Texas where Nathan's at?
00:07:27:10 - 00:07:30:11
Nate Carver
Yes. It's. Are we back? Okay. We're back.
00:07:30:13 - 00:07:32:03
Lindsey Meyer
We got it.
00:07:32:05 - 00:07:54:08
Nate Carver
Yeah. So this is going to be a tough one. Okay, we got to networking, I guess. Is it right to think of it in terms of the old school way of doing networking and and then this day and age with AI and all the different technical pieces, what are your thoughts?
00:07:54:10 - 00:08:18:13
Lindsey Meyer
I think it's fun to get creative. I think old school works just as well as new school. I think depending once again on your audience. Audience. If you're looking at first time home buyers, getting a little more techie, speaking the language crafty, I think even getting to know that generation, working beside them and having some input on how you market would really go a long way.
00:08:18:15 - 00:08:41:10
Lindsey Meyer
I think that there's just a variety of different things, and it's what you feel comfortable with and what you're willing to accept and how far you're able to go. You absolutely do not want to put a video out there. Okay, well, what are you willing to do? And is there a goal to get over that, that, nervousness or that stop, you know, kind of see where you're at right yourself.
00:08:41:10 - 00:09:02:02
Lindsey Meyer
And it's fun to try new things. And it's also great not to be too hard on yourself. So I think you have to start what's comfortable for you, what's easy to do and get in a routine. You know, every weekend is my social Saturday or social Sunday, so I'll have my tea in the morning, and then I'll go through and make sure I respond to people, send personal notes.
00:09:02:02 - 00:09:05:21
Lindsey Meyer
And and that's just my rhythm. So just an example.
00:09:05:23 - 00:09:34:18
Nate Carver
Nice. I set up, I guess my rhythm is Fridays are the days that I set up videos or text messages. My blog and I, I, you know, a year ago that was not even on, on my radar. Something had I'd be willing to do 1 or 2 deals like not doing it. No way. And you know, when it comes to networking I do things like, Chamber of Commerce meetings.
00:09:34:24 - 00:09:55:08
Nate Carver
There's a couple, you know, more focused groups that I'm a part of. And within the real estate agent world as a lender that I'll go to. But then from there, I understand that everybody I want to get in front of is not going to be at those events. And it's like, well, how do I get in front of those people?
00:09:55:10 - 00:10:02:23
Nate Carver
I would say I'm on. I think I'm on every social media platform now. There's my personal platform for you.
00:10:02:23 - 00:10:05:06
Lindsey Meyer
Does that feel like a lot?
00:10:05:08 - 00:10:36:02
Nate Carver
No, because there there are tools that help manage all of that. We're to the point where it'll it'll take your, your single piece of content and format it for everything else and publish it automatically. Right. So you have to sit there and go, oh, I just created this thing for LinkedIn. Now I'm going to create something for Facebook and TikTok and, and Instagram, Twitter.
00:10:36:04 - 00:11:00:06
Nate Carver
There's, there's tools that will do all that for you. So you do your content creation once and it'll format it for everything. And that's, that's made that pretty easy for me. And I just, I find that if I block off time, like, I know for one hour on Friday, I'm going to do video content or I'm going to do articles, or, you know, my blog.
00:11:00:08 - 00:11:24:00
Nate Carver
That seems to for me, that seems to be about right. And then, everything else, as long as it pops on my calendar, I can plan for it, like podcast. And for example, I mean, I don't do podcasting 24 seven, but, you know, and I schedule this. And so where it just comes up on my calendar and I'm already set to do it.
00:11:24:00 - 00:11:48:23
Nate Carver
And so it happens pretty easily. And I guess the other part of that I have, I have accepted that I don't have to be the expert on everything, just my one little piece. Maybe that's having a conversation. But there's other people out there that can do all of that other stuff, whatever that is, from formatting to the production.
00:11:49:00 - 00:12:18:10
Nate Carver
You know, it it's pretty inexpensive, to find those, those people that can do the skill set that they're an expert at, right? So it kind of frees me up to focus on the, the part that I like to do. And, I have grown into it. I've grown or I'm growing into it and and, in finding that it's not nearly as scary as one might think and, it's quite fun.
00:12:18:10 - 00:12:38:09
Nate Carver
It's pretty entertaining, I hope. And, I feel like I'm putting pretty good content out there, but I'm always looking at, okay, how's how's a better way or what? What's out there that I need to be aware of, especially in terms of networking. And you touched on it a little bit. I'd like to ask you a little bit more on it.
00:12:38:11 - 00:12:46:13
Nate Carver
To expand on, on the webinars that you mentioned with 4 or 5 people. Can you talk to me about that?
00:12:46:15 - 00:13:12:14
Lindsey Meyer
If, we have Emba webinars that, we're hosting, it's going to be in October and November. MBA's already promoting. They have been a fantastic partner and supporter, of the message of networking and community and connectivity. So we are lucky enough to have small groups. I have the first session with Jay, our Nasir and Jake Vermillion.
00:13:12:14 - 00:13:33:19
Lindsey Meyer
So super pumped for that conversation. And then Liz Short is taking the second half, in November. So we have some superstars lined up for that as well. So lot of opportunity. We're going to be hitting MMA as well. You'll see us at the NBA booth to sign books. At one point we're going to have a breakfast one morning.
00:13:33:21 - 00:14:05:20
Lindsey Meyer
And, we're launching the book on Sunday, the Sunday before MBA. So we're super pumped to get going. And I think for us, we've done a lot of different networking groups. There's elite networking groups locally that we've spoken to. We've spoken now for different state MBAs, in New England specifically, and Connecticut. And I say we as far as Liz Short and I, my coauthor, but we have a ton of opportunities for our authors to spread their own message.
00:14:05:22 - 00:14:25:12
Lindsey Meyer
The book reads a little bit like a chicken noodle soup for the soul, with some metrics and also differentiations on hey, are you more data minded? Are you like, I'm just an introvert? Completely. Do you use organizations to get ahead? So there's a lot of ideas that go back to that question you asked me just a little bit ago.
00:14:25:15 - 00:14:33:18
Lindsey Meyer
How do I get started? What do you suggest to use? And I really think our authors carry a strong message where you can learn a lot more about that, not just from me.
00:14:33:20 - 00:14:47:02
Nate Carver
Wow. So what? I'm curious, what have you seen has been maybe a number one networking mistake that you're seeing agents making currently?
00:14:47:04 - 00:15:11:10
Lindsey Meyer
I think sometimes we chase our tail. I think it's easy to get overwhelmed and have a lot to do and not know where to just start and where to just do it. I've reached out to a lot of, industry folks that I've met with a lot of experience. I've hired coaches and mentors, had friends reach out. So I use my people when I'm unsure on where to start, what to do.
00:15:11:10 - 00:15:35:16
Lindsey Meyer
I put together some ideas, you know, group, group some thoughts together as far as what to do for the future and having and hiring, if you have the means, if not, network. Find someone where you can give back to each other, give that advice to each other and try something out. Maybe it's not social media, maybe it's creating community messaging.
00:15:35:18 - 00:15:55:17
Lindsey Meyer
You know what's really short? Mentioned it in her speech this past week. You know, prominent playgrounds, new coffee shops, things that would interest the community. You know, we see the sports schedules go out and whatnot. But how do you just get a little bit different to draw that attention and maybe host a coffee event and you give something back.
00:15:55:17 - 00:16:04:12
Lindsey Meyer
You're doing something for the community. So there's a lot of options out there, and you just got to work hard to find the right one and get started.
00:16:04:14 - 00:16:25:19
Nate Carver
That's cool. So I just this weekend I started doing some of that and, yeah. And so so I went, so there's, a boot store to Culver's. I love to cover boots. I'm in advertising here, but, they got a store I went over to, and I bought a pair of boots, but they would. I wore a two pair.
00:16:25:19 - 00:16:50:14
Nate Carver
Now, the. I wore a pair in there because they have a shining station. Right. And so I did a ended up doing a video there talking about what they're doing, you know. And then I just tagged it with, you know, Nate Carver, your favorite mortgage guy. It's got nothing to do with mortgages. But I love that shop. I do this walk.
00:16:50:14 - 00:17:10:20
Nate Carver
It smells like leather. They take great care. And then I did the exact same thing, with the fishing guide Tippy fishing Saturday. And, I had such a wonderful time, and we caught a lot of fish and and, had a great conversation. So I absolutely promoted his business. And so I guess maybe that's cross-pollinating.
00:17:10:22 - 00:17:13:04
Lindsey Meyer
Yeah, exactly.
00:17:13:06 - 00:17:38:08
Nate Carver
You know, and and getting I'm happy to introduce them to, to my share of influence and circle of friends and, and, you know, maybe I get out in front of him some do it, for his sphere of influence. We'll see. I think that's what happens. But, yeah. So there's that's me rethinking networking, rather than right now.
00:17:38:08 - 00:17:41:12
Lindsey Meyer
You just saw it. Yeah. We witnessed it.
00:17:41:14 - 00:17:42:12
Nate Carver
Oh, there you go.
00:17:42:12 - 00:17:45:19
Lindsey Meyer
Works great. Oh. We're done. No, I.
00:17:45:19 - 00:17:46:19
Nate Carver
Think we're done.
00:17:46:21 - 00:17:48:20
Lindsey Meyer
It's not that easy.
00:17:48:22 - 00:18:13:02
Nate Carver
But you. Yeah. So tell me, So I, I had this conversation with some of Maryland Park real estate partners. Often real estate has made more millionaires out of women than any other industry out there. I believe that's still true. Maybe crypto, I don't know, but, I'm sticking with real estate.
00:18:13:04 - 00:18:13:11
Lindsey Meyer
Right.
00:18:13:12 - 00:18:29:01
Nate Carver
What are you seeing? Some opportunities for women, in the industry for for them to to be leaders or to become leaders. I think there's a lot of opportunity with everything that's changing. That's right. To pick your areas.
00:18:29:03 - 00:18:57:11
Lindsey Meyer
There is, I think, as far as being a woman in the industry, especially for myself, I've gotten out there on a national platform and also locally attending certain groups, and I've connected with people that are interested and motivated to connect with me. You know, I also like connecting with that person in the corner that might be a little more shy and sparking up a conversation, because we're all there for the the same reason.
00:18:57:13 - 00:19:14:05
Lindsey Meyer
So I think that, as far as when we network and when we put ourselves out there, and the best way to do so, I think it's just being ourselves, taking a chance, being honest. If you're nervous, you can say, hey, I'm nervous. I haven't really networked a lot. Do you go to a lot of events around here?
00:19:14:05 - 00:19:33:01
Lindsey Meyer
Maybe you you get a referral on the next event and have a buddy to be able to go to then. So it's also for me, it's really hard when you when you depending on the size to remember people's names. So I don't want to be rude by ripping out my phone. But I do try to say, hey, can I, do you mind if I connect with you on LinkedIn right here?
00:19:33:04 - 00:19:53:20
Lindsey Meyer
Or can you type in your name? So we're connected because then I can go back and see everyone I connected with over the past three days when I was at a particular, you know, event or, conference. So I just think that, you know, you just have to put yourself out there. You just got to do it, and the rest will come.
00:19:53:20 - 00:20:13:03
Lindsey Meyer
And I think for real estate agents in particular, you're working with the community, find your own passion and find the people like fishing that have a similar passion. Create a group, create friendships if it's there, or just create an outlet for people once a week. So there's a lot out there to do. And I love the fishing example.
00:20:13:05 - 00:20:29:04
Nate Carver
Yeah, I want to I've taken I've taken several realtors fishing, taking a title company, fishing and one of the things I love to do. So, I've had some realtors also do beekeeping. I've had some realtors come out and do beekeeping with me.
00:20:29:06 - 00:20:33:23
Lindsey Meyer
Oh, I would do that. That's awesome.
00:20:34:00 - 00:20:44:14
Nate Carver
Well, there you go. He just I've got I've got seeds, I've got big and, any histamines in case you get stung. It's. So they got stung a lot.
00:20:44:18 - 00:20:49:04
Lindsey Meyer
You have to do that. I'm going to hold you to it. You have to do something like that.
00:20:49:06 - 00:21:07:03
Nate Carver
Okay? Yeah, I'll do it. Yeah. So. So we're almost out of time. Tell me, tell me the dates when the book is released where people can find it, and, and if they want to reach you directly, what's the best way to contact you?
00:21:07:05 - 00:21:32:03
Lindsey Meyer
Fantastic. Well, you can reach me on LinkedIn. Lindsey Meyer. All ease. And the book launches officially. The target date is August 15th on Amazon. We do have a preorder link that you can click through and purchase the book for $20, and I can get you that. Nathan. Otherwise, please feel free to reach out to Liz short myself or any of the authors.
00:21:32:05 - 00:21:51:04
Lindsey Meyer
We'd love to get to know you. That's you know, we wrote this book out of understanding that it's hard. It's not the easiest to get yourself out there and know that people are just people. We all are just people. We need to be kind. So thank you so much for learning a little bit more, Nathan. Appreciate once again you having me on here.
00:21:51:04 - 00:22:02:05
Lindsey Meyer
And I hope that a lot of real estate professionals were able to get a few tips or one to take away with, and hopefully it betters your business and possibly your personal life too.
00:22:02:07 - 00:22:12:07
Nate Carver
All right. Thank you Lindsey. We'll put the links down the down below, wherever you're watching or listening to this podcast. Thank you. Lindsey. And, we'll see you next.
00:22:12:07 - 00:22:15:21
Lindsey Meyer
Piece flying around me. Nathan. The beach. Just CDC.
00:22:15:23 - 00:22:17:00
Nate Carver
I saw it.
00:22:17:02 - 00:22:17:13
Lindsey Meyer
Sorry to.
00:22:17:13 - 00:22:19:08
Nate Carver
Interrupt. You still live near. Yeah.
00:22:19:10 - 00:22:24:01
Lindsey Meyer
It's a sign. Thank you.
00:22:32:14 - 00:22:40:16
